Profile & Inspirations

Melissa McArthur established her business originally from a small Clerkenwell workshop in 1998, straight after graduating with a BA Hons in Jewellery Design from London’s prestigious, Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. She launched her first collection at London Fashion week, which she continues to show seasonally at and now, her line-up also includes New York, Tokyo and Paris.

Over the years she has developed an extensive range of designs, producing new pieces and styles each season, her lust for fresh water pearls has inspired her very successful modern pearl collections. Her love of colour, has inspired her extensive gem collections which feature a broad and exceptionally gorgeous colour palette ranging from bold colour contrasts to subtle and nuanced, transparent to opaque, traditional hand cut stones sourced from all over the world.

Throughout her career Melissa has teamed up and collaborated with some of the most exciting people. Some of her favourite projects; to design and make a collection of brightly dyed horn pieces for the “Radical Fashion” exhibition in 2002 at the V&A, to create a “Petite Diamond Briolette Collection” for Paul Smith’s London flagship store, and most recently, Fortnum and Mason commissioned Melissa’s “Very Modern Freshwater Pearl Collection” in 9ct gold, which is currently on sale in store.

Melissa sells her collections in renowned department stores, select stores, design shops, jewellers and boutiques in over 30 countries throughout the world including some of her favourite London shops. She was thrilled to open and run her eponymous boutique, workshop and showroom on the Kings Road; “Melissa McArthur Jewellery,” which was located ‘’exactly half way between Vivienne Westwood and The Bluebird’’ for 6 years until deciding she wanted to focus her time on her first love; design.

MM is now excited to be working in a light and beautiful studio in the leafy end of Chiswick, London. This is the setting where Melissa develops her designs, which her skilled production team make by hand. Throughout the years the shapes and materials have varied but she has always advocated the special quality of being able to hand make in London, using British made metals.

45Another central element of the MM philosophy is a desire for simplicity which is made special by her attention to detail, meticulous craftsmanship and quality control. Her inspiration: architecture, modernist design, furniture, Art, and many periods of fashion and travel. Melissa loves to dissect her favourite architecture, finding fluid lines which play with positive and negative space which are then applied to the female form. The designed, man-made lines accentuate the accidental beauty of the natural gems and pearls which she finds on her travels.

Melissa left Australia bound for London in 1988, since then she has travelled to 49 countries finding inspiration for her designs. The result; unique collections filled with exciting colours, beautiful stones and pearls. Her designs are versatile, easy to wear and ultra-feminine in style or, as one of her treasured customers said, “I live in my MM pieces, but I’m still left wanting to buy more.’’

Melissa McArthur: “Precious, Refined, Modern, Different, Exciting and Ultimately Feminine.”
